Information Literacy Skills - 3rd 9 weeks

The 3rd 9 week period will focus on the following:

5th grade - Defining basic elements found in literature.

4th grade - Research! I am working with the 4th grade teacher on a collaborative research project on heros of the American Revolution. This project will include a variety of skills including: Using print and online encyclopedias to answer information questions; Using basic research techniques with teacher guidance; Taking notes from resources using skimming, identifying key words, and paraphrasing to avoid plagiarism; Using parts of the book as information sources; Selecting and evaluating print and non-print resources; Producing a final product from research using a research process; Recognizing appropriate uses of information and information technology; Citing bibliographic information; Demonstrating ethical and legal use of information technology.

3rd grade - Locating non-fiction books using the Dewey Decimal System; Using parts of a book as information sources.

2nd grade - Locating a book using the online catalog.

1st grade - Research! I am working with the 1st grade teachers on a collaborative research project on animals. Students will use primary encyclopedias and dictionaries to create their own book. This project will focus on many skills such as: Identifying parts of a book; Understanding purpose of title page and table of contents; Aquiring information through reading; Using picture dictionaries as information sources; Using primary encyclopedias to answer information questions; Using maps and globes as information sources; Using basic research techniques with teacher guidance; Recognizing appropriate uses of information and information technology.

Kindergarten - Recognizing award winning books.

In addition to these lessons, teachers may bring their students to check out books as a class or send them individually as needed. Destiny, our online catalog, is now available for school or home use!

Book Fair

Book Fair Preview week is November 10-14. If you would like to help your child make a wish list, please check the attached schedule to see when his/her class is coming. Download preview_schedule.xls

Book Fair Sales week is November 17-21. If you would like to shop with your child, we will be open before and after the Thanksgiving Feast. We will also be open Thursday night Nov. 20th 5-7:00 for Book Fair Family Night. There will be games, stories, Chick-fil-A, and pizza. Hope to see you there!

Information Literacy Skills - 2nd 9 weeks

The 2nd 9 week period will focus on the following:

1books22med15th grade - Research! I am working with the 5th grade teachers on a collaborative immigration project. It will encompass many skills: Use encyclopedias, atlases, internet resources to answer information questions; Recognize appropriate uses of information technology; Select and evaluate print and non-print resources; Use basic research techniques; Takes notes from resources using skimming, identifying keywords and paraphrasing avoiding plagiarism; Use cross-references in multiple types of sources; Demonstrate ethical and legal use of technology and information; Cite bibliographic information; Produce final product from research such as paragraph, poster, model, etc. using a research process.

4th grade - Guide words in an encyclopedia; Use encyclopedias, atlases, thesauri and internet to answer information questions; Use GALILEO for basic information searches.

3rd grade - Research! I am working with the 3rd grade teachers on a collaborative American heros project. It will encompass many skills: Demonstrates comprehension of non-fiction; Uses encyclopedias, A-V, non-fiction books, and internet resources to answer information questions; Identify the steps of the research process; Use basic research techniques, Take notes from resources using skimming, identifying keywords,and paraphrasing avoiding plagiarism; Demonstrate ethical and legal use of technology and information; Recognize appropriate uses of information and information technology; Cite bibliographic information.

2nd grade - Use parts of a book as information sources; Use guide words to locate information in beginner dictionaries; Use a variety of media (dictionary, encyclopedia, thesaurus, internet) to locate information

1st grade - Identify parts of a book; Understand purpose of title page and table of contents; Acquire information through reading.

Kindergarten - Browsing; Idenify parts of a book; Know the arrangement of the Everybody section

Information Literacy Skills - 1st 9 weeks

Big_bookworm_color This year Information Literacy Skills will be collaboratively taught at the point of need. Lessons in the media center are used to introduce, reinforce, or otherwise enhance standards that are taught in the classroom. The first 9 week period will focus on the following:

5th grade - Orientation, Destiny, and Using parts of a book as information sources (glossary, index, appendix, bibliography)

4th grade - Orientation, Destiny, and Using parts of a book as information sources (copyright, appendix, bibliography, preface)

3rd grade - Orientation, Destiny, Comprehension of fiction books, Using guide words and using a dictionary

2nd grade - Orientation, Fiction v. Nonfiction, Numerical order of Nonfiction, Locating a book using Dewey Decimal System

1st grade - Orientation, Book Care, Browsing, Relationship between call number & author's name in the Everybody section, Fiction v. Nonfiction, Numerical order of Nonfiction

Kindergarten - Orientation, Book Care
